Baby AJ, you are one month old as I write this. What a month it has been!
Likes: You love being held. This makes sense given that you are only a month old, but boy do you still love it. Especially being worn in the Moby Wrap. You usually enjoy tummy time, not really fussing that much when we put you on your tummy. When your pacifier stays in you enjoy riding in the car [thankfully!] which was very nice on our vacation last week. You love listening to music or singing, especially when your Papa sings to calm you down. You enjoy taking a bath. When we put you in the baby tub, you settle down and relax.
Dislikes: Cold diaper wipes. Getting dressed or undressed. When we take to long to get you a bottle. When you loose your pacifier. When we take your bottle to try to burp you.
Biggest Achievement this month: Definitely the most appreciated achievement has been your sleep habits. You are a wonderful sleeper and I am so thankful for it. I know it was nothing we did since you've been sleeping well since we came home, so I cannot brag about how well we did... only be super thankful for the blessing.
Biggest Challenge of the month: Not too much has been a challenge. I hesitate to put that down because I don't want it to make next month horrible, but really, it has gone well. You have the expected fussy time in the evenings usually. It typically comes just before bedtime when you've eaten, been changed but yet don't want to go to sleep, but don't seem to want to be awake either. Usually you start fussing and flailing your arms and kicking your legs. You want the pacifier then spit it out, we try giving you more food, but hesitate because we don't want to over fill your little tummy. Thankfully this fussy time doesn't last for too long in the night.
Talking/Communication: In the last week or so I have heard you occasionally making little noises that sound like the beginning of coos. It's when you're tummy is full and your diaper is clean, and you aren't yet tired.
Eating: When we came home from the hospital, you were eating 2-3 ounces at a time usually 3 hours apart. Now you are up to 3-4 ounces at a time with occasionally taking as much as 6, but that doesn't happen too often.
Major Milestones: When doing tummy time, you can turn your head from side to side. I remember the first time you did it was when we were visiting friends. You were exactly 2 weeks old then.
You are now usually sleeping through the night... well, at least I think it's considered. I've heard most people describe it as when you sleep 6 hours uninterrupted. Well, your first night home you slept about 5 1/2 hours uninterrupted and have kept that up most nights, slowly increasing. I think the longest stretch we've had was nearly 7 hours while on vacation. Thank you baby girl! I know that we are incredibly blessed to get this much sleep and I also know this could change in the future, so I'm enjoying it for now.
Out and About: You do not mind getting out and about at all as long as you can be held instead of staying in the carseat, and as long as you have a pacifier. Usually Papa has the moby wrap on before I even realize it. He loves to wear you!
Firsts: You are now wearing cloth diapers. We just started using them more frequently, and I am excited! I wanted to wait until your cord fell off, which it did at 10 days old, but then wanted to wait until our new washer came to make it easier to wash them. Now that it arrived, I'm hoping to use cloth the majority of the time.
We also took you to the zoo for the first time at 10 days old. You slept through most of it. But since we plan to go more in the future, I'm sure you will see the animals again soon and maybe this time not snooze the whole time :)
Favorite Baby Gear: The moby wrap, hands down. You love this thing and we do too. When we were on vacation for Labor Day Family Camp, we used this almost all the time, especially during chapels. It worked out so well! We also are appreciating the Rock 'n Play for sleeping at night. It is nice to have you right next to the bed, both for peace of mind and so we can quickly give you your pacifier back while warming a bottle.
How big you are: When you were born, you weighed 8lbs 10.6 oz and were measured at 20" long. At your first appointment at 5 days old, you were past your birth weight at 8lb 10.75 oz and measured shorter at 19 1/2" long. This put you at 85.8% for weight and 43.6% for height. You started out wearing newborn clothes. We didn't expect you to be in them for long... yet here you are at a month old and still fitting into some of them! But now we are also breaking into some of the 0-3 month size as some newborn stuff isn't fitting anymore, some onesies and all the pants. Yet some of the next size is huge on you [especially the dresses with attached onesies]. Crazy!
Typical Schedule/Day: Your schedule varies all over the place as far as times and length of naps. However, typically you will eat, then spend the next 45 minutes or so awake. Then when you start to get fussy, we will swaddle you up and put a pacifier in [which probably had just fallen out or will fall out almost immediately]. If you seem drowsy enough, we will lay you down in your crib or the vibrate rocker chair thing. Otherwise, we will hold you until you doze off. Then you will sleep for anywhere from 1 to 4 hours. Then we start the whole thing again. Typically this pattern begins around 6 in the morning and continues until 9 or 10 or so at night. At night, you sometimes wake close to 1am and want to be awake for an hour or so again, but sometimes you'll go back to sleep quickly. When Papa's not working, he does most of the night time feedings! He's amazing!!!
Memories in the last month:
Meeting friends and family, including Aunt Annie, Grandma Christine, Grandma and Grandpa H, Aunt Kimberly Oma and Grandpa W, your cousin twin who is just over 2 months older than you, your soon to be best friend E and so many other people!
